Sambucus is a genus of flowering plants in the family Adoxaceae. Elderberry is native to Europe, Africa, and parts of Asia, but it’s become common in the U.S.
Elderberry is used for its antioxidant activity, to lower cholesterol, improve vision, boost the immune system, improve heart health, and for coughs, colds, flu, infections, and bacterial and viral tonsillitis.
